Senior Adventures In Learning (SAIL) of Melbourne is an interfaith, not-for-profit organization that serves senior adults (50+) throughout Brevard County. Local churches and synagogues sponsor this organization.
Activities are planned and developed by the people who use them. You will see people learning foreign languages, studying local history, practicing yoga or learning how to use a computer. Other activities include group trips to historical sites or just for fun. And the people planning and directing all of these things are older adults themselves, using the valuable skills that they have cultivated throughout their lifetime.
The genius of the program is that it is a ministry by and with older adults rather than just a ministry to them. The participants feel a sense of ownership as they set their own course. SAIL rejects the myth that senior citizens are frail, lonely and dependent, sliding down the hill to the end of life. People of all faiths work together in SAIL to help older adults sustain and celebrate life.
The primary purpose of SAIL is to enrich the later years with opportunities for service to others, self-expression, meaningful work, and close friendships. An equally important goal is to help older adults remain independent in their own living situation as long as they choose.
There are terms each year (Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall). Programs are conducted on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and run for eight consecutive weeks.
